Sunday Brunch Rant Week 3

On the wake of the NFL's free agency period opening up, there has been a plethora of contract talks involving dissatisfaction amongst NFL players. We haveDT Albert Haynesworth locking in a 7-year, $100 million, deal with the Redskins. We have CB Nnamdi Asomugha getting a 3-year, $45.3 million, deal with the Raiders. And we have a number of other players inking huge contracts during the early days of the free agency period. Recession? What recession? I know some people aren't fond of criticizing what wealthy people do with their money, but these teams and players SHOULD have SOME consideration for the economic hardships average Americans are going through.

On the other end, we have Manny Ramirez and his continued denial of contract offers by the Los Angeles Dodgers. $45 million isn't enough i guess. All of this showmanship might actually cause him to enter the season without being part of any team's roster. That's a pretty smart idea - "I would rather not play at all and receive no pay, than to go with a $45 million deal with the Dodgers." Good job Manny. Give Scott Boras a shout out for me.

Thank goodness the NBA isn't in this conversation, because they are actually in need of $175 million for who-knows-what. It has gotten to the point that the league will have to lower the salary cap as a result of America's recession. At least they are feeling it just like you and I. No sport is immune to economic climates and when we are faced with troubles, more fiscal responsibility should be practiced by everyone. Hear that Steinbrenner? Well let me not single him out, because he isn't the only one I'm talking about. At any rate, I just want some teams to practice restraint - at least for now.
