5 Things to Watch in Super Bowl XLVIII

The penultimate stage for American sports is here once again. The Super Bowl XLVIII match-up is finally set as sports fans will take sides between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. Two polarizing styles of football, one epic battle. Who are you taking?

Even Las Vegas has had some trouble picking sides in this gridiron showdown. Sports betting sites, like SportsBettingOnline.ag, have given the slight edge to Denver but not by much. Some odds lines have the Broncos favored by up to three points while others say the Seahawks are two-point favorites.

Regardless of the odds, there will be plenty of storylines to follow during the game. Here are the top 5 things to watch:

1. Old School vs New School (Peyton vs Russell)

In today's pass-heavy game, the focus on quarterback play has only intensified. The championship game will shine its bright light on two contrasting quarterbacks: one with an old school, inside-the-pocket approach, the other with a new school, mobile approach that relies on improvisation. Peyton Manning is a first ballot Hall of Famer with a Super Bowl ring to backup his credentials. Russell Wilson is a young, exciting QB with plenty of potential. The clear edge goes to Manning but Wilson isn't a push over and will pose a worthy competition.  

 2. High Octane Offense vs Lockdown Defense

Besides contrasting QBs, these two teams have completely different identities. The Broncos boast an impressive offense that can score in bunches, while the Seahawks pride themselves on having a staunch defense. We will literally be watching the league's #1 offense play against the #1 defense. It doesn't get any better than that.      

3. Richard Sherman’s Mouth

After the Seahawks defeated the 49ers, Richard Sherman made headlines with a controversial post-game interview aimed at Sand Francisco and WR Michael Crabtree. Sherman's rant made it easy for fans to paint him as a villain and jump on board the Broncos bandwagon. Meanwhile, the media will be swarming the Seahawks' outspoken cornerback before and after the game. Should be interesting to hear what Sherman will have to say. 

4. Running Back Battle

Marshawn Lynch is called Beast Mode for a reason. His earth-shaking, breakout runs have built that title and earned him a spot as the #6 rusher this season. Denver also presents a surprisingly strong ground game spearheaded by Knowshon Moreno (#12 on the list). While passing will be the main course, running will be a strong side dish that will determine who takes the prize.     

5. Battle of the Elements

Last but not least, we should not ignore the weather in this year's Super Bowl. Forecast predictions have the temperature around 19 degrees with wind gusts nearing 20 mph. Little to no chance of rain or snow but this is the first cold weather Super Bowl in recent history. Both teams will be battling more than each other, which will make for a more entertaining game.

Potential Rule Changes Coming to NBA?

The rules are about to change.

In what could be called a "beta test" for rule modifications, the NBA Developmental League will be implementing two new changes to the game of basketball. First off, the concept of goaltending will be redefined to the one used in international competition. At the same time, overtime periods will be trimmed down significantly.

That is, goaltending officiating will now allow players to knock away balls while they are on the rim. This eliminates the awkward situations where players must sit and watch while rogue shots spin around the rim for excessive amounts of time. This also means that "lucky bounces" may now be negated by a vicious swat from an opposing defender.

As for the overtime rules, the length of post-regulation periods will be shortened from five minutes to three minutes. This elevates the intensity of overtime matches as teams will have less opportunities to score. On a side note, this rule would benefit network programming as it will reduce the problems associated with overlapping scheduled programs.

The D-League serves as a research and development arm of the NBA and will put these new changes to the test for potential transition into the pro game. One successful experiment in the D-League that will debut this upcoming 2010-11 NBA season is the use of adidas-developed NBA Revolution 30 uniforms.

Thus, if the new rule changes yield favorable results there can be changes coming to the Association as early as next season.

Rushing Into the 2010 NFL Season

There are many things to consider when looking at NFL player projections, especially when it comes down to who could make an impact on the football spread as the leading rusher of the league. And be the difference maker in your fantasy football league. However, the running game has changed in recent seasons.

This is because many teams now use the running back by committee approach, which means they swap out first, second, (and sometimes) third string running backs more regularly. The New York Giants (Bradshaw/Jacobs), Carolina Panthers (Williams/Stewart) and Dallas Cowboys (Barber/Jones/Choice) are just a few clear examples of this.

The main thing to look for when making your predictions on rushing potential is opportunity. Try to determine which players will get the majority of the carries for his respective team. Beyond that, injury proneness is another factor to consider as skilled running backs are worth nothing when they are sitting on the injured reserve list.

Here are the top three favorites for most rushing yards in 2010:

1. Chris Johnson: Johnson is coming off an incredible year in which he rushed for over 2,000 yards and averaged an extraordinary 5.6 YPC (yards per carry).

CJ (Chris Johnson) has blazing speed and runs behind one of the best offensive lines in football. The only thing holding him back from another spectacular season is history, as all the running backs that have posted 2,000 yard seasons have seen a major decline in their statistics the following season. Most likely we will see a good, but not great, year out of CJ.

2. Adrian Peterson: Now that the big question in Minnesota has been answered and Brett Favre will return for his 50th season, the team can expect another season of stellar passing, which in turn will benefit the running game.

Peterson will likely improve on his rushing totals from 2009 as his stats slightly declined from two seasons ago. First off, he should receive more carries now that Chester Taylor is out of the mix, which will surely result in more yards. Beyond that, Peterson has rushed for 1,300+ yards in each of his first three seasons and has a solid track record of being a top-tier running back.

3. Frank Gore: If there is any one running back who benefited the most from his team’s offseason moves it was Frank Gore. The 49ers added over 650 pounds of force to their offensive line by selecting Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati with their two first round picks in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Add to that the fact that San Francisco Head Coach Mike Singletary has made himself very clear about establishing a physical, power running football team, which could lead to Gore having a career year. If he can stay healthy, he could definitely compete for most rushing yards this season.

An After Thought...

The Miami Dolphins are another team worthy of noting when it comes to the ground game. The Fins ranked fourth in rushing last season behind the tandem of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, accounting for the most rushing touchdowns in the league (tied with the Baltimore Ravens). While injuries have plagued Brown in the past and Williams is no longer in his prime, there is plenty of potential to consider in Miami's running back core.

The acquisition of wide receiver Brandon Marshall has only improved the passing game, forcing opposing defenses to spread the field. As a result, the running game will have a few more openings as teams will no longer be able to "stack the box" and anticipate Miami's run plays. This could lead to a more productive backfield for the Dolphins, which could catapult them to a top-two rushing offense in the NFL.

Star-Studded Humility

Fame and power are two virtues commonly associated with selfish individuals. In the case of Alonzo Mourning and Dwyane Wade, that association does not apply. Instead, their collective celebrity status has been used time and time again to serve those less fortunate in our society. On Sunday afternoon, that trend continued as the two NBA champions capped off The Summer Groove with their All-Star Game finale.

Alley-oop passes, rim-rattling dunks and long range three-pointers dominated the exhibition game in front of a packed crowd. NBA athletes, both current and past, performed for the South Florida fans as the Old School faced off against the New School on the hardwood. The smiles painted on the faces of the stars and fans alike attested to the jovial environment at the American Airlines Arena. Players like Tim Hardaway, Dorell Wright, Mo Peterson, Samuel Dalembert, Brandon Bass and a slew of other notables gave the audience a show worth their money; Money that would go towards a greater cause than oneself.

While the show on the court was quite a spectacle, the benefits it generated go beyond spectacular. The Alonzo Mourning Charities and Wade's World Foundation have raised millions of dollars towards the betterment of our youth for several years. Since 1997, the Alonzo Mourning Charities has raised in excess of $7 million. The Wade's World Foundation came to fruition in 2003 and has also generated vast amounts of funding for youth initiatives in South Florida and Chicago. Together they work towards a healthier, more educated generation of children that are properly equipped with the resources to succeed and lead in our world.

The spotlight may constantly be shining on the faces of Zo and D. Wade, but it is their humility that guides that spotlight towards the faces of our youth - society's future - during the week of The Summer Groove. It's gestures of kindness like these that make Miami's two greatest NBA stars models for a better society.

State of the AFC: Q&A with Mike Kranzler

The last time we spoke with Mike Kranzler he gave us his perspective on the Dolphins' draft projections earlier in mid-February. A few months and some key offseason moves later, he's back to talk about the Dolphins and the state of the AFC. Having covered the San Diego Chargers for quite some time now, he's offered his journalistic commentary through sites like Scout.com, the San Diego Union-Tribune and Bleacher Report. Here's his take on the latest happenings in the NFL as the draft nears in our Q&A session.

Miami Sports Generation: Having covered the AFC through your writings on the San Diego Chargers, what do you think this offseason has done to the power rankings of the conference?

Mike Kranzler: The biggest change has to be the balance of power in the AFC East. The Jets and Dolphins have both made significant improvements through free agency, and the Patriots have done little to keep up with them. If Mark Sanchez proves himself to be a quality starting quarterback (which at this point remains to be seen), the Jets could be the class of the division for a long time due to the young stars on this team.

Dolphins fans should really be breathing a sigh of relief right now, because Brandon Marshall came dangerously close to becoming a Jet before he signed with the Dolphins. Apparently, the Jets were set to sign him to an offer sheet that would have sent their first-round pick (No. 29) to the Broncos in exchange for Marshall, but they couldn't agree on a contract. That would have been a disaster scenario for DolFans, but it couldn't have worked out better for them in the end.

Additionally, the Baltimore Ravens took a big step forward in signing Anquan Boldin, and could be the team to beat this season in the North.

On the other side, I expect the Broncos and Steelers to take a tumble down the power rankings this year. A year after trading their franchise QB, the Broncos unloaded their star wide receiver to the Dolphins in a move that I personally think will be very beneficial to both sides.

One of the most under-reported aspects of Brandon Marshall's attitude issues in Denver seems to be his guilt over his role in the death of teammate Darrent Williams in 2007. Mike Klis of the Denver Post had a great story in February about his troubles (http://www.denverpost.com/broncosheadlines/ci_14441207?source=rss), and I think that a change of scenery will be more than enough to straighten him out.

As for the Steelers, they've just traded their star wide receiver for a 5th rounder, and their franchise quarterback could soon be out the door due to his frequent brushes with the law (along with the two widely-reported accusations of sexual assault, there have been grumblings of at least two or three more cases where the victim chose not to press any charges). The Steelers are one of the classiest organizations in the NFL, and I don't think many would blame Art Rooney for making a statement and cutting ties with Big Ben. They will likely struggle this year without Santonio Holmes and possibly Big Ben, but should be set up to draft one of next year's star QBs such as Jake Locker (Washington), Andrew Luck (Stanford), or Ryan Mallett (Arkansas).

MSG: Having lost two "big name" players from the Chargers to the Jets, who do you see as the team that benefited the most?

MK: I would have to say that the Chargers benefited the most, although we will not be able to know for sure until after the draft next season. Tomlinson is one of the greatest running backs of all time, but there's no denying (unless you're LT) that he's past is prime. I would have really liked to see him stick around for one more year to mentor whatever young running back (my money is on Fresno State's Ryan Mathews or Auburn's Ben Tate) the Chargers pick up in the draft, but he obviously felt like he was no longer welcome in San Diego.

As for Cromartie, he is an incredibly talented athlete, but he has some major attitude issues. I've watched him loaf through practice for several years in training camp, and his play on the field often reflected that. He has a tendency to gamble in coverage, and lately has been beat more often than not. Outside of his standout All-Pro campaign when he notched 10 interceptions, he's only had five over the rest of his career. He also is a surprisingly unwilling tackler for a cornerback of his size, and his performance against the Jets in the playoffs (http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2010/01/22/antonio-cromartie-looks-like-he-was-tanking-against-the-jets-on-two-crucial-4th-quarter-plays/) was the last straw for the Chargers.

Along with his off-field exploits, I think the Chargers were the big winners in the Cromartie deal, especially if he plays enough to net them a 2nd rounder next year.

Additionally, the Jets have made several big-name moves at the risk of destroying their locker room chemistry. Cromartie and Holmes both have had multiple run-ins with the law, and even Tomlinson wasn't the best influence for the younger players in San Diego. If the Jets add Jason Taylor this week, they will be adding another veteran who has made his feelings for the Jets and their fans very well-known, and this team could very easily implode from all these moves.

Rex Ryan, while quite controversial, is a great coach, but I think it will take his best job yet in order to keep this locker room intact.

MSG: Since the last time we spoke, many factors have changed the landscape of the upcoming draft, do you have any new and different perspectives now?

MK: With the offseason additions of Marshall and Karlos Dansby, the Dolphins are likely no longer targeting my original possibilities of Rolando McClain and Dez Bryant. However, I could see them going for a pass-rushing outside linebacker like Sergio Kindle of Texas or a run-stuffing defensive tackle like Tennessee's Dan Williams. Since the Fins are much more likely to find a capable OLB with one of their later picks, I would suggest that they go with Williams if he is available.

Another route that a lot of Miami fans have been clamoring for lately is Clemson stud C.J. Spiller, but I don't see him lasting until No. 12.

In terms of the rest of the draft, I think the two big possibilities are Tim Tebow and/or Colt McCoy sneaking into the end of the 1st round or very beginning of the 2nd round. There have been grumblings of QB-needy teams like the Buffalo Bills trading back into the end of the 1st for Tebow, and Colt McCoy reminds me a lot of Drew Brees. Those two, while nowhere near as highly rated as Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen, have what it takes to be successful pros if put in the right situations.

The only other surprise could be the possibility of Clausen suffering an Aaron Rodgers-like freefall if he makes it past the Bills at No. 9, but I think the big news will be the start of Round 2, now that the 1st round has been moved to primetime on Thursday. With a whole day to reevaluate their draft boards and hit the phones, the first few picks on Day 2 are going to be in very high demand for teams looking to trade up to grab the players they covet.

It's going to be a very exciting draft with the combination of the new format and one of the deepest groups of prospects in years, and I think it's going to be a lot of fun. The NFL Draft is already the best weekend of the year for many football fans, and I think this is a great idea to make it even more exciting.

Series to Watch: Thunder vs Lakers

Don't call it an upset just yet, but this is a series that is definitely worth watching.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are very underestimated and are not expected to make any splash in the playoffs, especially against the Los Angeles Lakers. With that said, there are intriguing factors in this first-round playoff series that should be taken into consideration.

With this being the first ever playoff series for the Thunder since leaving Seattle, the Oklahoma City crowd will be intense and in full support of their Thunder. The first taste of postseason stardom will definitely generate an electrifying environment among Thunder fans. And their emotions will be strikingly similar to those felt by Golden State Warrior fans in 2007.

In the '07 Western Conference Playoffs match-up between the Dallas Mavericks (first seed) and Golden State Warriors (eighth seed), the crowd played an integral role in the Warriors' success. Winning the series in six games (4-2), Golden State fueled their performances on the passion of a city, having not reached the playoffs since 1994. The energy of the crowd was palpable, even through television sets.

There is no doubt that Oklahoma City will mimic that same passion.

Behind MVP-candidate Kevin Durant, the Thunder will bring a combination of youth, energy and swagger to the court come playoff time. Most notably, the Thunder will having nothing to lose when they face the Lakers, which could be a dangerous factor to consider for L.A. Conversely, the Lakers will have something to prove as they are expected to reach the NBA Finals once again and contend for another title.

This season the Thunder have played the Lakers four times, losing the series 1-3. But the Lakers winded down their season on a mediocre note (5-5 in the final 10 games), while the Thunder had some impressive wins down the stretch, defeating the Lakers, Celtics and Mavericks in the process.

Don't just count this series out as a four-and-out for the Lakers, the Thunder could very well steal a few games and make it exciting. However, if L.A. even dismisses the Thunder as a meager challenge, it could be the making of an unprecedented upset.

Brandon Knight Chooses Kentucky

After a long-awaited decision, South Florida high school hoops phenom Brandon Knight chose John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats as his next destination. Rumors had Kansas, Syracuse, Connecticut and Florida all in the mix for Knight's services. But Kentucky's program lured in the 6'3, 175-lb guard out of Pincrest High School.

And Kentucky needed another wave of star recruits to replenish their NBA-bound freshman class, which included John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton. Only one Kentucky upperclassman declared for the draft, that being junior Patrick Patterson.

That leaves Brandon Knight with a shot at starting or receiving significant playing time off the bench from his first year. While he may not have the freakish athletic abilities that other five-star recruits behold, Knight brings an uncanny ability to penetrate into the paint, effectively use crossover moves and create plays for teammates.

There is no doubt that this kid will excel at the next level, but what will matter more is whether he will fall to the trend of "one-and-dones" that have plagued some marquee NCAA programs. For his sake, a college career beyond his freshman season will serve Knight well and mold him into an NBA-ready guard. At any rate, South Florida will see their hometown product blaze the college hoops world fairly soon, and perhaps become an eventual lottery draft pick at the pros.

Miami Heat

• By the score of 98-81, the Miami Heat defeated the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night to secure their sixth straight victory.

• Michael Beasley was Miami's leading scorer, posting 28 points, 9 rebounds, and shooting 50% from the field.

• Dwyane Wade took a back seat as Miami cruised to victory, only playing 27 minutes and contributing 10 points to the total score.

• The Heat shot 57% from behind the arc and dropped 12 three-pointers in the process, led by Quentin Richardson and Dorell Wright (four each). 

• Miami's next game is Friday night at the Indiana Pacers. Tipoff is at 7:00 pm and coverage can be found on Sun Sports.

Miami Dolphins

• The Miami Dolphins released the preseason schedule yesterday afternoon, opening up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sun Life Stadium.

• The remaining schedule includes an away game versus the Jascksonville Jaguars, home game against the Atlanta Falcons and away game against the Dallas Cowboys.

• Kickoff to the Dolphins preseason is set to take place between August 12 through 16, game time is to be announced at a later date. 

Florida Marlins

• The Florida Marlins announced their 5-man pitching rotation yesterday as follows: Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad, and Nate Robertson.

• Newly acquired Nate Robertson comes from the Detroit Tigers after a 2 wins, 3 losses season where he recorded a 5.44 ERA. 

• Cody Ross may not be on the Marlins active roster to open up the season after a calf injury that may land him on the disabled list. 

• Mike Lamb and Brian Barden made the final cuts to round out the Marlins complete roster after surviving Spring Training. 

Local News

• Two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year and local high school hoops phenom Brandon Knight dazzled once again on the big stage as he drained a buzzer-beater to win the game at the McDonald's All-American invitational. 

• While Knight posted an uncharacteristic nine points, he still was able to showcase his versatile skills among the best high school basketball stars in the country.

• Knight is expected to announce his college plans in the next few weeks with Kansas, Kentucky, Florida, Connecticut or Syracuse as the likely suitor.

South Florida Athlete Earns Prestigious Award

Brandon Knight. Learn the name.

The South Florida product out of Pine Crest High School (Fort Lauderdale) has earned the prestigious award of 2009-10 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. As impressive a feat it is to receive such an elite award, it is more impressive when people find out that this is Knight's second consecutive year in earning this title.

Along with LeBron James and Greg Oden, Knight joins the company of a few remarkable high school basketball players in recent history in earning the award twice. He is now the first ever athlete in the state of Florida to accomplish this.

Pictured above, Knight was presented the trophy without notice during his second period of class by none other than Alonzo Mourning, a former Gatorade Player of the Year recipient (1987-88). The act symbolized a passing of the baton, so to speak, from the legend to the prospect.

And Knight has already caught the attention of marquee college basketball programs across the nation. Powerhouses like Kentucky, Kansas and Connecticut have all shown serious interest in the 6'3, 175-pound guard. The University of Florida and University of Miami have also thrown their in their bids, but are far from favorites to land the local phenom.  

This season at Pine Crest, Knight has averaged 32.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.5 steals. The senior guard has surpassed the 40-point mark various times and recorded a career-high 49 points on January 27th. In essence, stating that Knight is a productive player would be an understatement. His shifty crossovers, elusive finishes and versatile playing style have built up hype from the local level to the national spotlight. It's only a matter of time before Brandon Knight becomes a household name.

Who's on the Block?

Every time this year the breeze of trade speculation begins to churn up and form into a full blown wind storm of who is expected to be dealt before the NBA trade deadline (February 19th). While the still-lucrative 2010 free agency awaits at the end of the season, many key players are currently on the block. We weigh in on those players, what teams are in search of their services and the likelihood of the player's departure.

Amar'e Stoudemire, F, Phoenix Suns - How many times have people heard this name emerge in trade rumors over the last few seasons? It's fair to say lots of times. The intriguing part of this go-around is that the Miami Heat, which built their roster for the 2010 free agency, are allegedly the strongest pursuers of Stoudemire. Yahoo! Sports reports that Pat Riley has offered players such as Michael Beasley, Dorrell Wright, Jermaine O'Neal and Quentin Richardson in return for Stoudemire. It seems that the most enticing aspect of Amar'e's coming to Miami is his expiring contract and instant impact (i.e.another attempt to please Dwyane Wade and keep him beyond this year). But this may backfire if executed, as Wade is very close to both Wright and Richardson. Likelihood of Departure: 50%

Antawn Jamison, F, Washington Wizards - With Caron Butler gone, Jamison is also likely on his way out of D.C. He has been highly sought after by elite teams, such as the Cavaliers and Celtics, and could be an immediate impact anywhere he goes. Rumors had him departing the Wizards in a package deal with Butler, but Washington might now receive more value from trading of each separately. Jamison has traveled around the league in the past, so don't be surprised if his bags are pre-packed and ready for a flight to Cleveland or Boston. Likelihood of Departure: 80%
   

Tracy McGrady, G/F, Houston Rockets - He's still in the league? Hard to believe, but not only is McGrady still in the NBA, but he's of interest to certain teams. Most notably the New York Knicks have come up in trade discussions for T-Mac as they continue to fix the mess left by Isiah Thomas. McGrady has been in trade rumors for quite some time, but has never been dealt. This may be another boy-who-cried wolf situation and the reality is the T-Mac will either stay a Rocket or eventually be bought out. His prime has come, gone and filed for social security. Likelihood of Departure: 20%

Ray Allen, G, Boston Celtics - With Boston not playing up to their expectations this season, speculation potential roster shuffling has become more evident. Similar to the Shaq-era Heat, the Celtics have now been plagued with being "too old" to win. Allen is 34 years old and is clearly a part of the elderly stigma that has been placed on the Celts. With Boston considering Antawn Jamison, Allen could be the piece that makes such a deal happen. Allen is not a part of the Celtics future and his $19.7 million expiring contract are surely to be a lucrative bargaining chip. Despite this, Boston could very well stick with him until season's end. Likelihood of Departure: 40%

Tyrus Thomas, F, Chicago Bulls - The athletic swingman of the Bulls has been caught in perhaps the most rumors of all as his dynamic talent is appealing to many teams. A list of interested parties include the Bobcats, Trail Blazers, Knicks, Kings, Spurs, Nuggets and Hornets (just to name more than a few). Thomas' defensive ability, freakish length and high flying vertical leap all provide great incentives for teams of interest. With the Bulls still in flux, Thomas is ideal trade bait for revamping key roster spots on the team. Teammate Kirk Hinrich has been mentioned in the same breath in what could be a combo trade. Likelihood of Departure: 70%

Wizards Make First Move

The Wizards and Mavericks have agreed to exchange Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton. The deal provides Howard with the opportunity to step in as the Wizards' new star player. Realistically, Gooden, Ross and Singleton were only thrown in to match salaries, but will have a shot at being impact players on the team. On Dallas' end, Butler and Haywood are instant improvements that will fit nicely into the roles they will be assigned. Stevenson was not a desired pick by the Mavs, but he does provide offensive sparks from time to time. Both teams benefited from this trade, but only one team increased their chances to make a playoff run, and that team is owned by Mark Cuban.

Super Bowl XLIV: The Day After

Today all newspaper headlines are filled with Bourbon Street flavor as the New Orleans Saints won one for their beloved city. And underneath a cool balmy night in South Florida, the teams and the fans could not ask for a better environment. It was a picture perfect setting for the game of football as the Saints marched into Super Bowl XLIV and emerged with the Lombardi Trophy held firmly in their grasps.

We've heard all the analysis of the game by now; with commentators questioning Peyton Manning's intercepted pass, the Indianapolis Colts' play calling and every other mistake that could have possibly gone the other way. If you were to speak to a Saints player they would simply tell you that it was destiny. Whichever way you choose to look at it, there is no doubt that the passion and pride of New Orleans was felt every step of the way down the path towards Super Bowl. It was a force that eventually could not be stopped by even the playoff-tested Colts.

As everyone sets sail back home and return to their daily lives, history has been set in South Florida; another Super Bowl that proved statistics, analysis and odds are worth nothing when the underdog harnesses the heart of a lion.   

One Year and Counting

On this day one year ago we began this endeavor that we call Miami Sports Generation in hopes of providing South Florida fans with the latest in sports buzz and captivating stories on key sports issues. Today we are proud to say that we are still around and going strong.

Twenty thousand plus visitors later we find ourselves with a consistent fan base that engages and interacts with us, whether it be through comments or social networking messages. We are grateful for our readers, equally those that are regulars, occasionals and first timers. We hope to continue in our efforts to build a community of sports enthusiasts - a place where we can all share our pride.

To make this short and sweet, thank you all and we hope you stick with us because we aren't going anywhere.

Welcome to Miami

After securing the best records in their respective conferences, the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints are headed to South Florida to play in Super Bowl XLIV. Fans from all over the world will descend upon South Florida for a match-up that will solidify a legend in Peyton Manning or elevate the pride of New Orleans to new heights.

Here's a brief overview of some interesting notes going into Super Bowl Sunday:

Quick Facts About the Match-Up

• For the first time since 1993, two number one seeds will play on the big stage for the NFL Championship. 
  

• Peyton Manning will make his second consecutive Super Bowl appearance in South Florida, while the Colts will have played all four of their franchise's Super Bowls in South Florida.
  

• The Saints will be playing in their first ever Super Bowl in franchise history.
  

• Both the Colts and the Saints played in Miami this season and mounted late-game comebacks against the Miami Dolphins.
  

• Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell will be the fifth rookie coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl.
  
  
• This will be the second team left by Tony Dungy to reach a Super Bowl in the following year, the Tampa Bay Bucaneers did the same in 2002.

South Florida will be hosting its record-breaking 10th Super Bowl and will also be hosting Pro Bowl 2010 the week before Super Bowl. It can't get any better than this for South Florida - two primetime events in one ideal destination.

The only thing missing is a guarantee that rain will not drown out the excitement like it did in 2007. Fans can only hope for drier days ahead.

Sneak Peek to Super Bowl Ads

Febrauary 7th, 2010, will mark yet another historic day on the the football as millions will tune into Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida. While the game may be the main event, the commercials will catch viewers by surprise with big budget, over-the-top campaigns that are sure to impress. But one advertiser has given viewers the opportunity to take a piece of the limelight by filming their own rendition of a Doritos ad.

Since 2007, Doritos has used the consumer-driven advertising strategy through the "Crash the Super Bowl" program. Up against staunch competition, two unemployed  brothers from Batesville, Indiana trumped Madison Avenue-made commercials and ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Ad Meter last year with their Doritos commercial entry; they were awarded $1 million dollars by Doritos for their $2,000-budget entries.

This time around, Doritos is offering $1 million to the ad that scores the number one spot on the Ad Meter, $600,000 to the ad that scores number two on the Ad Meter and $400,000 to the ad that scores number three on the Ad Meter. With six finalists selected out of a pool of 4,000 contestants, it is now up to the people to choose which three ads will be aired on game day. The finalists are as follows:

Fantasy Football Champion Announced

It's official. The champion of Miami Sport Generation's first annual fantasy football league is none other than: "El Balsero." After 16 weeks of head-to-head fantasy match-ups, the winner has now been determined. And as we promised, prizes will be given to the top three winners in the league. The prize structure is as follows:

• 1st place receives a Miami Sports Generation T-shirt, their choice of a Miami Sports Generation Beer Stein, Travel Mug or Coffee Mug, plus a Miami Sports Generation Bumper Sticker.

Fantasy Football Playoffs Underway

The seeds are set. After all the lineup rearrangements, free agent add-drops and trades in between, the playoff bracket has been set for the Miami Sports Generation Fantasy Football League.

Neither of the authors, Anthony nor I, made it to the fantasy post-season and as a result there will be prizes for all top three finishers in the league. The prize structure is as follows:

• 1st place winner will receive a Miami Sports Generation T-shirt, their choice of a Miami Sports Generation Beer Stein, Travel Mug or Coffee mug and a Miami Sports Generation Bumper Sticker.

• 2nd place winner will receive thier choice of a Miami Sports Generation T-Shirt, Beer Stein, Travel Mug or Coffee Mug and a Bumper Sticker.

Zo Gives Back Once Again

December 3, 2009

Those who have been fortunate enough to enjoy the holiday season with family, friends and loved ones know the sheer happiness that comes with this special time of the year. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to experience such joy during the holidays and must settle for what life has given them.

That's where Alonzo Mourning steps in.

Once again, the former Miami Heat great has found a way to give back to South Florida's less fortunate youth. On December 7th, the Alonzo Mourning Charities will host their annual Zo's Holiday Party. More than 400 children will be invited to this event, where they will receive gifts, watch a talent show, decorate holiday cookies, partake in face painting, listen to seasonal music, dance and eat a traditional holiday dinner.

These children, ages 8 to 18, are selected by partner charity organizations and will be treated to a wonderful time by the Alonzo Mourning Charities staff. Zo's goal is to ensure that each and every child receives a gift on this special day in order to bring holiday cheer and make their holidays a memorable one. But this cannot happen without the support of the community.

Zo is looking for generous members of the community to contribute to this honorable cause and you can be a part of it all. Below are just a few ways in which you can support the holiday party:

• Donate a new, unwrapped toy and deliver or mail it to the Alonzo Mourning Charities office at 2901 Florida Avenue, Suite 806, Coconut Grove, FL 33133;

• Purchase a gift online from the Alonzo Mourning Charities wish list registry in-store or online at Toys ‘R’ Us or Target Stores.

• Submit a monetary donation via Paypal; or mail check/drop off cash to the Alonzo Mourning Charities office above.

But that's not all. Other ways to get involved include hosting a toy drive among family and friends or with a school or classroom. It is asked that all gifts are delivered/dropped-off by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009 so that preparations and wrapping can be completed in time for Zo’s Holiday Party.
