The Cleveland Cavaliers are poised to spend what ever it takes to win an NBA Championship. In the past two months they have traded for Shaquille O'Neal, re-signed forward Anderson Verajao and sign free agent G Anthony Parker from Toronto. Now they have signed restricted free agent F Jamario Moon to an offer sheet.The details of the offer have not been disclosed but the Heat have seven days to match the offer or let Moon his own way.
Jamario Moon was acquired last year along with Jermaine O'Neal in the trade that sent Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to Toronto.
Cleveland has a good chance of signing Moon with Miami's attention focused on other players, namely Lamar Odom and Carlos Boozer. The Heat, already congested with small forwards, stated they are looking for a way to cut payroll to stay under the luxury tax threshold. Pat Riley stated he might go with 13 players on the roster instead of the maximum 15.
This move could be good for the Heat. The departure of Moon can make way for the return of Lamar Odom and a trade that sends Haslem and Dorell Wright to Utah for Carlos Boozer. This de-congests the roster at the small forward position, leaving Lamar Odom, James Jones and Yakhouba Diawara as the core, and puts the Heat in a good position to contend.
This can also be a bad thing. If we lose Moon and Odom decides to stay in Los Angeles, the heat lose their starting small forward and will have to force the Beasley experiment at the three spot. James Jones started a few times at SF, but the Heat need his scoring off the bench.
We all saw how the Heat struggled without Moon in the Playoffs. It would be great to keep him but Odom would be a worthy replacement - a more costly, yet more effective replacement.
