The Florida Marlins pulled to 2 games behind the Wild Card leading Colorodo Rockies and moved past the Atlanta Braves in the division standings with a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves off Ross Gload's first walk-off home run.
"I don't think I ever hit a home run that I knew it was gone" said Gload.
But we all knew the game was over the moment the ball left the bat.
Entering the bottom of the ninth, it looked like the Marlins were headed to their second loss in the past 3 games. The Braves sent in Closer Rafael Soriano (1-2) who had 8 saves in 8 opportunities in July and has been virtually unhittable all season (1.54 ERA).
Cody Ross walked to lead off the inning and John Baker moved him over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ross Gload was put in to pinch hit for for Leo Nunez, who gave up a home run to Garret Anderson in the top of the ninth, and delivered.
Ricky Nolasco (8-7) started the game for the Fish. He left the game in the seventh with the score tied 2-2. Ricky ran into trouble in the third inning but was able to strike out Brian McCann and Chipper Jones to strand a man on first and third and limit the damage to one run.
Hanley Ramirez answered with a two-run double in the bottom of the 3rd to take the lead 2-1.
Chipper Jones led off the top of the 6th inning with a solo home run to tie the score at 2. Jones has been a headache for Nolasco the past 2 years, going 7-13 with 4 HR and 6 RBI.
Florida is sending Ace Josh Johnson to the mound tomorrow. Atlanta is countering with Kenshin Kawakami.
Quick Notes: The Marlins are 6-1 since being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first series of the second half. Manager Freddi Gonzalez served a one-game suspension and Pitcher Burke Badenhop served his first of a three-game suspension for hitting Orlando Hudson with a pitch in retaliation on Sunday.
